Abba Yusuf, the governor of Kano, leaves amid a party crisis

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has flown out of the state amidst an ongoing crisis within the ruling New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP).

The governor’s departure came after he led a reconciliation meeting between the Secretary to the State Government, Abdullahi Baffa Bichi, and aggrieved members of his constituency on Monday evening.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the
governor waited for about two hours at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport before boarding his flight to Abuja.

Notably, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, the party leader, was in the state at the time of the governor’s departure. Kwankwaso had been engaging in meetings with party loyalists, the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Jibril Falgore, and other stakeholders.

Recall that the party decided to suspend Bichi and Commissioner of Transportation, Muhammad Diggol citing abuse of power and disloyalty.

In Kano, there are concerns about Kwankwaso’s activities, with party loyalists and opposition parties calling for Governor Yusuf’s “freedom” from Kwankwaso’s alleged control. A section of the members of the party claims that Kwankwaso has been ruling the state by proxy, dictating the administration’s decisions.
