ADC Addresses Christian Genocide in Nigeria: Party Clarifies Position
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has clarified its stance on the alleged Christian genocide in Nigeria, stating that there is no evidence of such persecution.
Speaking during an interview on Tuesday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) often interprets any form of criticism as a personal attack.
His remarks follow the recent declaration of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” over alleged Christian genocide by former United States President Donald Trump.
Trump had also stated that he asked the US Defence Department to consider possible military action in Nigeria if the government “continues to allow the killing of Christians”.
Abdullahi clarified, “I cannot say there is evidence of genocide and from what we have seen we cannot describe what is going on as genocide.
“The question is not about how the Americans are framing it. The question is that people are being killed in Nigeria and we have the opportunity to let the Americans know that there’s no genocide going on in Nigeria.”
“Nobody is accusing this government of persecuting Christians or engaging in religious bigotry. They are simply missing the point.”
He added that the APC has shown “historical incompetence”, noting that the party behaves as though any criticism is an embarrassment to them.
According to him, unlike the APC, the ADC does not view the international designation as an attempt to score political points.
“We are embarrassed as Nigerians that outsiders are now defining our security challenges in a way that could deepen divisions,” he said.
