Former Nigeria national team goalkeeper Peter “Apo” Fregene, a 1968 Olympian, has passed away at 77 after a prolonged struggle with health issues.

Fregene, who died peacefully surrounded by his wife Tina and two children, had garnered support from the sports community during his health battles.

Renowned sports journalist and former national team captain, Segun Odegbami, confirmed the sad news, expressing gratitude to all who supported Fregene through his illness.

Odegbami acknowledged the incredible efforts made to keep the football icon alive until his passing.

His words: “On behalf of all generations of Nigerian footballers, Olympians, sports persons, his family, friends, fans and a few incredible Nigerians that quietly rallied round and, with their support, prayers and the will of the Creator of the Universe, kept him alive until this night, I say a big ‘thank you’.”

Fregene’s passing marks the end of an era for Nigerian football, with tributes pouring in for the iconic goalkeeper.
