Mrs. Regina Akume, the House of Representatives member for Gboko/Tarka Federal Constituency, has publicly called on her husband, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Senator George Akume, to return to Christianity and not abandon the faith.
The lawmaker made the emotional appeal during a speech at the wedding reception of the SGF’s son, held on Sunday, December 28, in Makurdi, Benue State.
A video of her remarks, shared by Idoma Television on Monday, has since gone viral.In the clip, Mrs. Akume prayed for her husband’s long life and good health while delivering pointed advice.
“I pray that the Lord will increase his years, good health of mind and body, and give him clarity in thinking and doing things right,” she said.”
“And he should remember that he is a Christian, and it is Christianity that brought him this far. To drop Christianity now and go for anything else, he will not be successful.
“So my advice to him is to come back to Christianity and follow the line of Christ.”
She emphasized that their rise to prominence, including the SGF position, was through Jesus Christ, adding, “We came all the way to the office of SGF, not through enemies but through Jesus Christ. And Jesus Christ is still alive and still working for us.”
The comments come amid reports that Senator Akume, a former Benue State governor who celebrated his 72nd birthday last weekend, recently married a second wife, Zaynab Ngohemba-George, previously married to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi.
Neither the SGF nor his office has issued any official response to his wife’s public statement or the marriage reports as of Tuesday.
The video has sparked widespread discussions on social media, with many interpreting Mrs. Akume’s words as a subtle reference to recent personal developments in the high-profile family.
