APGA Opens Door to Backing Tinubu in 2027 Presidential Race
The leadership of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has signaled its strong political alignment with the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stating that the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) may soon formally endorse him for the 2027 general elections.
Barrister Sylvester Ezeokenwa, the APGA National Chairman, made the announcement at a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, emphasizing that APGA is the only major progressive party in Nigeria and that its philosophy aligns with Tinubu’s style of administration.
Ezeokenwa stated that it is a long-standing tradition of APGA to support the central government if it is seen to be implementing good governance, a practice demonstrated by past and current APGA governors in Anambra State.
“It is in the history of the party to work with the central government that is progressive… That is what the Governor of Anambra, Professor Soludo, is demonstrating,” he said.
He noted that APGA’s focus is on delivering good governance, not just participating in elections. He further cited President Tinubu’s recent visit to Anambra State, where he wore the APGA insignia, as underscoring the “progressive nature shared by the two leaders.”
“You saw the day Mr President visited Anambra State, he wore the APGA insignia without bias, so we are quite in support of him,” he said.
Addressing persistent rumors regarding the defection of Anambra State Governor Professor Chukwuma Soludo to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Ezeokenwa offered an unequivocal denial.
He said: “Professor Soludo is going nowhere. I can say unequivocally that the Anambra State Governor, as party leader, never nursed such ambition.”
The National Chairman also weighed in on national security, criticizing the existing setup and advocating for reform.
He criticized the over-centralization of Nigeria’s security architecture, claiming that no country with a federal system operates in such a manner. He stressed that his leadership would always support decentralization.
Barrister Ezeokenwa also expressed appreciation for President Tinubu’s leadership and specifically praised the appointment of Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu as a Minister, highlighting it as a significant milestone for APGA
He stated, “I can say it again and challenge anyone that she is the best Minister under this administration. This is the first time the party is producing a Minister not of the same party [as the President].”
Ezeokenwa attributed APGA’s strong performance in the last Anambra gubernatorial election to Governor Soludo’s accomplishments in delivering democracy dividends, dismissing opposition criticism as the “rants of misguided individuals.”
He highlighted the party’s “overwhelming victory”, winning all but seven local government areas, as proof of APGA’s popularity and impact in the state.
