Ashleigh Plumptre Nets First Super Falcons Goal as Nigeria Qualify for WAFCON After 1–1 Draw With Benin in Abeokuta

Super Falcons Qualify for WAFCON: Ashleigh Plumptre Scores Maiden Nigeria Goal in 1–1 Draw vs Benin

Ashleigh Plumptre marked a memorable night in Abeokuta as she scored her first-ever goal for the Super Falcons, helping Nigeria secure qualification for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after a 1–1 draw against Benin Republic on Monday.

The Al-Ittihad defender, who has become a fan favourite since switching allegiance from England, broke the deadlock with a fine left-footed strike midway through the first half, sparking wild celebrations among the home supporters at the MKO Abiola Stadium.

Despite Nigeria’s bright start, the visitors found a way back into the game through Yasminath Djibril’s towering header in the second half — a goal that ensured Benin earned a share of the spoils on the night but couldn’t overturn the first-leg deficit.

Nigeria’s 2–0 win in Cotonou last week meant the Super Falcons advanced 3–1 on aggregate, booking their place at next year’s WAFCON.

Speaking after the match, Plumptre said she was “overwhelmed” to score her first international goal and proud to help the team seal qualification.

“It’s a really special moment for me,” she said. “I’m just happy to have contributed. The fans have been amazing, and this team deserves to be at WAFCON.”

Head coach Justin Madugu praised his side’s determination and focus, saying the draw was enough to achieve their mission.

“We knew what was at stake,” Madugu said. “The first-leg win gave us confidence, but we wanted to finish the job here in front of our fans.”

The Super Falcons will now shift focus to preparations for the continental showpiece, as they aim to defend their record 11 WAFCON titles and continue building towards qualification for the next Women’s World Cup.
