Authorities Clarify that neighbors witnessed husband perched over wife’s corpse

The viral video titled ‘Mummy Calm Down’, which purportedly shows Toluige Olokoobi Babalola taking her own life, has caused controversy. The Edo State Police reportedly told Vanguard that suspicions have been sparked by the woman’s husband’s and neighbors’ contradictory testimonies.

Speaking at the Edo State Command Headquarters, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Chidi Nwabuzor disclosed that State Commissioner of Police Muhammad Adamu Dankwara launched an investigation as a result of the disparate testimony.

Nwabuzor stated that the husband whose name is Lawal, reported the incident on November 8, 2023. Upon his return from the market, he said that he discovered their two-year-old child, Ife Lawal, crying. Upon entering the house, he said that he found his wife hanging from a rope tied to the ceiling.

He said that he immediately untied her and cried for help, prompting the neighbors to accompany them to the hospital. The wife was pronounced dead and transferred to a mortuary in Benin City.

Following this, Lawal reported the incident to the Evbuotubu Division, and the DPO led a team to retrieve the rope and a suicide note allegedly written by the deceased. The DPO also examined the body but found no signs of violence.

As a result, the Edo State Commissioner of Police instructed the DPO to transfer the case to SCID for further investigation.

Conflicting statements have emerged, with the husband claiming the neighbors assisted him in freeing his wife, while the neighbors deny any involvement and state that they found Lawal on top of the deceased when they arrived.

These contrasting accounts prompted the Commissioner of Police to order a thorough investigation. Furthermore, the absence of rope marks on the deceased’s neck has raised suspicions, forming another aspect of the ongoing investigation.
