Banditry: We know their leaders by their names but we don’t know their foot soldiers. So if you don’t know their foot soldiers, how can you be fighting

Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi recently shared his honest thoughts about the recent kidnapping of schoolchildren in Kaduna and banditry activities in the nation in an interview with Arise TV.

Gumi proposed that the reason behind the government’s failure in fighting terrorism is that the core causes of the issue are not being sufficiently addressed. He asserted that it is challenging for the government to take meaningful action because it only knows the names of the bandit commanders, not their foot soldiers.

He suggests that a more grassroots approach is needed in order to effectively combat terrorism in Nigeria. Do you agree with Gumi’s assessment?

In his words;

“The government and everybody knows their leaders in fact there’s a book ‘i’m a bandit written by one murtala, an acdemician. He listed more than 160 bandit leaders. We know their leaders by their names but we don’t know their foot soldiers. So if you don’t know their foot soldiers, how can you be fighting”

“They can just come in as civilians and go out as civilians. It’s more than just meeting in Abuja, we have to drop to the field locally”
