Biafran separatist, Nnamdi Kanu sentences to remain in jail

According to BBC reports, Nigeria’s Supreme Court has overturned a 2022 ruling by a lower court that had ordered separatist leader Nnamdi Kanu’s freedom, ruling instead that he should remain behind bars.

The banned Indigenous People of Biafra (Ipob) organization, led by Nnamdi Kanu, has been advocating for the establishment of an independent state in southeast Nigeria.

He was originally arrested in 2015 on treason and terrorism charges, which he denied.

After deciding that the separatist leader had been wrongfully detained abroad, the Appeal Court withdrew all accusations against him in October of last year. His lawyers stated that he was held in Kenya, which has not stated if it played a role in Mr Kanu’s deportation to Nigeria.

Following the Supreme Court recent decision, Kanu is to remain under the custody of the secret police as the government sets a date for the continuation of his trial.
