Bobrisky, the controversial cross-dresser also known as Idris Okuneye, has lodged an appeal against the six-month maximum jail term handed down to him by a Federal High Court in Lagos for naira abuse charges leveled against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Okuneye, who pleaded guilty before Justice A.O. Awogboro, received the sentence on April 12, without the option of a fine.

The judge emphasized that the ruling should serve as a deterrent to others engaged in similar acts of abusing and defacing the naira.

In response, Bobrisky’s counsel, Bimbo Kusanu, filed a notice of appeal urging the Court of Appeal to overturn the maximum sentence and instead impose a fine of N50,000 for each count.

Kusanu argued that the trial court’s decision overlooked Bobrisky’s clean criminal record and failed to consider provisions under the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) that allow for lesser sentences.

The appeal further contends that Bobrisky promptly responded to the EFCC’s summons and did not prolong court proceedings by pleading guilty.

Kusanu criticized the trial court’s handling of the case, alleging a miscarriage of justice against Bobrisky due to what he perceives as an unjustifiably punitive sentence.
