Former Kano State Governor, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, has asserted that Nigerians should prioritise the credibility of their president over their regional origins as they approach the 2027 election cycle.
Speaking on Channels TV’s Sunday Politics, the former Kano Central Senator remarked that the debate surrounding the president’s region does not impact governance.
“All political parties should devise plans that enable them to present the best candidates. For Nigerians, our priority is to evaluate the candidates put forward by these parties,” Shekarau stated.
“Our challenge is for all parties to provide us with suitable candidates, ensuring we have the best options available. If we are only presented with undesirable choices, we will simply select the least objectionable,” the ex-governor added.
He also commented on the current state of the nation, urging the Bola Tinubu-led government to return to fundamental issues.
“The recent protests against poor governance send a clear message. This was not merely a regional or state issue; it was a national concern. It serves as a strong reminder to the President and the Federal Government.
“Nigerians are saying, ‘Please return to the drawing board and reconsider what you are offering us,’” Shekarau expressed.
The protests, which commenced on August 1 due to the harsh economic climate following the removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the naira, started peacefully but escalated in subsequent days, resulting in significant damage to both private and public properties, particularly in northern Nigeria.
