Tragedy struck on Sunday as four workers of the Bauchi State Urban Water Supply Corporation died at the Gubi Dam while performing routine cleaning exercise at the Treatment Plant.
A staff of the agency, under the Ministry of Water Resources said that two among the deceased were staff while the remaining two were casual workers.
It was further gathered that among them are a father and his son who was said to be preparing for his wedding.
“The deceased were cleaning the water system where water supplied to Bauchi metropolis is being treated.
“I learnt that they were in a reservoir and they saw some fish inside the dirty water. One of them was trying to catch fish. The fish was going deep, he followed it and died in the process, one colleague who saw what happened tried to rescue him but also died in the process.
“Then the third person was rescuing the second colleague while the fourth person tried to save them before he fell off and died. All the four of them were buried today, Sunday in accordance with Islamic rites.”
The workers were identified as Ibrahim Musa, Shu’aibu Hamza, Jamilu Yunusa and Abdulmalik Ibrahim Hamza.
Both the commissioner for Water Resources, Nuhu Zaki and the General Manager, Bauchi State Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Corporation, Aminu Gital, are yet to respond to calls and text messages sent to them by journalists at the time of filing this report.
It was learnt that the Commissioner was at the burial rites of the deceased which was held on Sunday afternoon.
The Public Relations Officer of the Bauchi State Police Command, Ahmed Wakil, a Chief Superintendent of Police, did not pick calls put through to his mobile telephone number as at the time of filing this report.
