Reports indicate that five individuals are feared dead, with numerous properties, including a bank and vehicles, destroyed by a tanker explosion in Agbor, the headquarters of Ika South Local Government Area in Delta State, on Sunday.
The incident occurred near a FirstBank branch along the Old Lagos/Asaba Road.
Eyewitnesses reported that the tanker erupted in flames as the driver attempted to make a turn on the road.
Residents stated that the raging inferno consumed vehicles, homes, and businesses, leaving behind the charred remains of victims at the scene.
Videos shared online depict local residents desperately trying to douse the flames while awaiting the arrival of firefighters.
Daily Trust reports witness Mr. Chuks Ogwude stating, “It was a horrific sight. The fire spread rapidly, and people felt powerless. We tried to help, but there was little we could do. Authorities must act swiftly to prevent further tragedies like this.”
Residents voiced their frustration over the delayed response from emergency services, arguing that such incidents have become alarmingly frequent due to poor road maintenance and reckless driving by tanker operators.
Resident Mrs. Ebele Chiejine remarked, “We’ve witnessed numerous accidents on this road because tankers are not adequately monitored. The government must implement safety measures.”
Multiple buildings and vehicles surrounding the scene were reduced to ash, with some structures still ablaze at the time of this report.
The Delta State Police Command and fire service personnel have since arrived to manage the situation.
In response to the incident, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori expressed profound sorrow, reporting that four people were killed and three others sustained injuries.
In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, the governor described the incident as horrifying and extended his condolences to the bereaved families, while wishing a swift recovery for the injured.
“It is with a heavy heart that I extend my sympathies to the people of Ika South Local Government and the affected families. This tragic event is deeply distressing. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their loved ones during this challenging time,” the statement read.
“I have directed the relevant agencies to respond promptly in providing necessary support to those affected by this unfortunate incident. We will ensure that the injured receive the best possible care and that families who lost loved ones are given the support they need.”
The governor also praised the Delta State Fire Service, local residents, and security agencies for their rapid response in containing the blaze and assisting victims.
“I commend the swift actions of our fire service, security agencies, and the compassionate citizens of Ika South who came together to extinguish the fire and aid the victims. Your selflessness and bravery in the face of such adversity are truly commendable,” Oborevwori stated.
