BREAKING: Abiola won June 12 election, I take responsibility for annulment

A former Military Head of State, Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida (IBB) has said that the June 12, 1993, presidential election was won by the late Moshood Abiola (MKO Abiola).

IBB made the disclosure at the presentation of his autobiography, ‘A Journey in Service’, and the launch of his presidential library in Abuja on Thursday, February 20.

According to the former head of state, the annulment of the 1993 presidential election is the most regrettable incident in the history of Nigeria.

Acknowledging the controversies that surrounded the decision he took during the said election, IBB confessed that he had at many instances contended with the right time to tell his own side of the story.

He also stated that despite the fact that the time of service differed, his administration was committed to leaving the country better than it met it.

Speaking further, IBB admitted that the June 12,1993, election was Nigeria’s freest and fairest election at the time, IBB said he regretted that his administration led a such a credible poll but failed to bring it to fruition.

“As the leader of the military administration, I accept full responsibility for all decisions taken under my watch, and June 12 happened under my watch.

“Mistakes, oversight, and missteps happened in quick succession, but as I state in my book, in all matters, we acted in the supreme national interest so that Nigeria could survive,” he said.
