Former Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki’s attorney, Abubakar Yesufu, has responded to rumors regarding his client’s medical care abroad and defended him against current charges. Yesufu explained the purpose and nature of Obaseki’s urgent medical journey in an interview with News Central TV. “For about 8 years as the governor of the state, and even 8 years as the economic advisor, he has not really done any serious medical checkup,” he said.
The lawyer confirmed ongoing communication with the former governor while addressing rumors about potential legal action. “I talk to Obaseki every day,” Yesufu said. “But he’s enthusiastic to complete his medical checkup, and he’s ready to come and answer to all the accusations.”
Responding to reports of possible arrest warrants, Yesufu noted, “There are moves being made to declare him wanted. I’m even surprised that somebody has not invited him formally.”
The Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo had set up a 14 member state assets verification committee to investigate the eight years tenure of Obaseki. The EFCC has also placed him on watch list as a result of some contracts awarded by his administration.
The former Governor’s counsel dismissed the substance of the allegations against his client, characterizing them as “nothing but a sublime piece of mysticism and a high-sounded nothing.” However, he indicated a strategic approach to their defense, stating, “This is not the time to open our chest of defense here, but at the appropriate time, we are going to open that.”
