The Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has described the withdrawal of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from the state’s local government elections as an act of cowardice.
Speaking to journalists on Saturday after casting his vote at Polling Unit 5, Ugbo Ward 4, in Ilaje Local Government Area, Aiyedatiwa criticized the PDP’s decision, suggesting it may have stemmed from a fear of losing.
“For PDP to pull out, that is cowardice. They participated in the whole process. ODIEC released the timetable for the election on time, I don’t know the reason for that (withdrawal). Maybe the fear of losing. Every election has its own logistics, and other political parties are participating. So, whatever reason that made them withdraw, I am not privy to that,” he stated.
Aiyedatiwa emphasized that the election was a significant step toward strengthening grassroots governance and development in the state.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring the effective operation of the local government system in accordance with the law.
“The local government is crucial to grassroots development. This election is a clear indication of our commitment to enhancing this level of governance,” the governor said.
The governor also lauded the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) for the smooth conduct of the polls.
“I just cast my vote without any crisis. This is just what happened during the November 16 governorship election, which was adjudged to be free and fair. The materials arrived early, the security is in place, and the citizens are here participating. At the end of the day, just as we had in the last election, we don’t expect anything less,” Aiyedatiwa remarked.
In a related development, the state’s Deputy Governor, Olayide Adelami, cast his vote at 9:45 a.m. at Igbooroko Unit 16, Ward 3, in Owo Local Government Area.
Adelami commended the electorate for their large turnout and urged them to vote en masse for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“The turnout is impressive. I encourage all eligible voters to cast their votes and support the APC for continued development in our state,” Adelami said.
Naija News recalls that the PDP withdrew from the polls on Thursday, citing a lack of confidence in ODIEC.
The announcement was made by the PDP Director of Media and Publicity in Ondo State, Leye Igbagbo.
