The Western Nigeria Security Network, codenamed Operation Amotekun, has been a game-changer in the South-West region of Nigeria. The security outfit to tackle the growing insecurity, kidnapping, and influx of unauthorised individuals from Northern Nigeria, Amotekun has achieved numerous successes and its effectiveness in addressing regional security challenges.
As a complementary force to the Nigerian Police and other security agencies, Amotekun has worked tirelessly to curb insecurity and protect the lives and properties of citizens in the South-West. Amotekun as an outfit that leverages local knowledge and Africa science has enabled the outfit to effectively tackle security threats.
Since the establishment of Amotekun in January 2020, some governors have shown a lack of commitment, which has delayed the outfit’s rapid development and progress. The six states Governors should know that the primary responsibility as it’s stated in Section 14(2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), is to ensure the security and welfare of the citizens.
It’s high time that governors in Ondo, Ekiti, Osun, Oyo, Ogun, and Lagos States strengthen Amotekun by equipping them with necessary funding and materials. The welfare of Amotekun personnel should be prioritised by paying their salaries and allowances on time, which will lead to greater success in their operations.
It is crystal clear that Amotekun is not an outfit meant to replace the Nigerian Police and other security agencies in operations and intelligence, but rather to complement the work of mainstream security in setting the region free from criminal elements. Amotekun should continue to work in line with its established laws without being overly ambitious about the successes recorded.
By working together with the mainstream security rather than competitors it will be easier to build a safer, more secure for all. It is time for Amotekun and mainstream security agencies to put aside their differences and work towards a common goal by protecting the lives and properties of Nigerian citizens.
