The Kano State Government has expressed strong opposition to the proposed tax reform bills currently before the National Assembly.
This comes just a week after Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State stated that the tax reform proposals favour only one region of the country.
During a meeting with the Christian community in Bauchi, Governor Bala urged President Bola Tinubu to reconsider the tax policy reforms, warning that they could lead to unrest.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, speaking through his Deputy, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, shared the government’s stance during the 2025 celebration at the Filin Mahaha, Kofar Naisa open theatre. A statement from the deputy governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Garba Shu’aibu, confirmed this.
The governor stated, “This tax reform bill is not the solution to our economic challenges. Kano State stands firmly against any policy that negatively impacts the welfare of our people.”
He commended the resilience of Kano residents amid economic hardships, labelling the proposed tax increase as “ill-timed, lopsided, and detrimental to the unity of the country.” He emphasised that Nigerians, particularly in the north, are suffering from hyperinflation and unprecedented insecurity, urging the presidency to focus on alleviating extreme poverty and hunger in the northern regions.
Governor Yusuf highlighted his administration’s significant achievements in healthcare, education, road construction, and foreign scholarship programmes. He also reminded citizens of the Supreme Court ruling in January 2024 that affirmed his position as the legitimately elected governor of Kano State.
According to the statement, Gwarzo celebrated the reinstatement of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II in 2024, calling it a triumph for the people’s will. He reiterated that the authority to appoint an Emir rests solely with the Governor of Kano State and urged those interfering in Kano Emirate matters to respect the law and maintain peace.
The deputy governor encouraged Kano residents to foster unity and resilience, stating, “Let 2025 be a year of shared prosperity and progress. Together, we will build a stronger Kano.”
