The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) experienced a setback on Thursday as Yusuf Shittu Galambi, representing the Gwaram Federal Constituency of Jigawa State, defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Galambi becomes the first NNPP member in the House of Representatives to join the ruling APC, bringing the total number of opposition members who have switched to the APC in the past six months to around 11.
He cited the persistent crisis within the NNPP—characterised by ongoing litigations and leadership struggles—as factors in his decision to leave. His constituents urged him to abandon the NNPP in favour of the APC, expressing their dissatisfaction with the party’s leadership.
The NNPP has become increasingly factionalised, with expelled founding members staking their claim to the party’s leadership, while loyalists of former Kano Governor Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso hold onto their positions within the party.
