BREAKING: Atiku Calls for Probe Into Sexual Harassment Allegations Against Senate President Akpabio

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called for a thorough and impartial investigation into allegations of sexual harassment, intimidation, and mistreatment levelled against Senate President Godswill Akpabio by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

In a statement on Friday, Atiku emphasised the gravity of the allegations and stressed the need for transparency in handling the matter.

“These allegations are grave and deserve a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation,” he stated.

He underscored the importance of integrity within the Nigerian Senate, stating that those in leadership positions must uphold the highest standards of dignity and respect.

“As the third most powerful figure in the country, the Senate President should embody unimpeachable character,” Atiku said.

Highlighting the broader implications of sexual harassment in the workplace, he noted that it serves as a major obstacle to women’s advancement and, by extension, the nation’s progress.

“Allegations of such misconduct should never be simply dismissed, particularly when they involve a public officer with immense power, influence, and responsibility,” he added.

Atiku further stated that the Senate President, as the chief presiding officer of the Upper Chamber, has a duty to champion women’s protection and empowerment through legislation, rather than being the subject of allegations that undermine those principles.

He urged President Bola Tinubu and the Senate to take the accusations seriously and ensure a credible, transparent, and independent investigation.

“The handling of this matter will send a strong message about Nigeria’s commitment to justice, accountability, and the inclusion of women in governance,” he remarked.

Atiku also pointed out the underrepresentation of women in the Senate, with only four female senators currently serving. He stressed the need to create an environment where female legislators can work without fear of harassment or intimidation.

“This moment demands careful and principled action to uphold the integrity of our institutions and ensure that every Nigerian, regardless of gender, is treated with dignity and respect,” he concluded.
