BREAKING: Atiku, Obi, Amaechi, Aregbesola, And Others Meet Privately With The National Political Consultative Group In Abuja.

Leading political figures gathered behind closed doors in Abuja on Sunday for an important strategic discussion. Attendees included Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President; Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in 2023; Rotimi Amaechi, the ex-governor of Rivers State; Rauf Aregbesola, the former governor of Osun State; along with other prominent leaders and stakeholders.

The meeting, hosted at the Abuja Continental Hotel, was organized by the North branch of the National Political Consultative Group. Its primary aim was to foster unity among opposition factions ahead of the 2027 general elections, as part of concerted efforts to present a consolidated front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The coalition has gained significant attention for its attempts to bring together diverse political voices across the spectrum.

However, the session faced an unexpected interruption when a dispute erupted over delegate representation from Jigawa State. Babachir Lawal, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation and a key member of the group, attempted to designate a delegate to speak on behalf of Jigawa. This move was met with strong opposition from other delegates from the state, who contended that the appointment lacked legitimacy and did not reflect the collective consensus of Jigawa stakeholders.

In a dramatic escalation, several Jigawa delegates hurried to the podium and physically blocked the nominated speaker, asserting their refusal to accept representation by individuals they had not officially endorsed. The confrontation caused a temporary halt to proceedings, with some participants visibly unsettled by the unfolding scene.

Security agencies—including officers from the Nigeria Police, Department of State Services (DSS), and private security personnel—acted swiftly to contain the situation, forming a protective barrier around key leaders such as Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rotimi Amaechi. Thanks to prompt intervention by senior coalition members, order was eventually restored.

A compromise was brokered when Mustapha Lamido, son of former Jigawa Governor Sule Lamido, along with another delegate, was selected to represent Jigawa in subsequent discussions, allowing the meeting to proceed after the disruption.
