Former President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic tanker explosion that occurred at Dikko Junction on the Abuja-Kaduna highway in Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State.
The incident, which happened on Saturday, claimed at least 86 lives and left 55 others injured.
In a statement issued on Sunday by his media aide, Garba Shehu, Buhari extended his condolences to the government and people of Niger State over the devastating loss.
The statement read:
“Former President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed his heartfelt condolences on the loss of lives in a fire following another petroleum tanker accident that occurred on Saturday at Dikko Junction on the Abuja-Kaduna highway in Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State.”
Buhari also condemned the recurring practice of scooping fuel from spilled tankers, describing it as a dangerous trend that continues to claim innocent lives despite repeated warnings from authorities.
The former president lamented the frequent nature of such tragedies, highlighting the urgent need for public awareness to prevent further incidents. He also wished the injured a quick recovery.
“He expressed disappointment that the practice of scooping up fuel is becoming more common in spite of warnings from the authorities and the devastating losses of life that had characteristically attended such incidents,” the statement added.
