In a recent statement via his official X account, Chidi Odinkalu, a law professor and former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, has shared his thoughts on a recent emotional moment involving Dele Farotimi.
Farotimi, a lawyer and activist, broke into tears during a live video while expressing gratitude to Nigerians for supporting him during his defamation case with Afe Babalola.
The case arose from Farotimi’s book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System, in which he accused Babalola of contributing to corruption in the judiciary.
In the live video, Farotimi became emotional as he spoke about the overwhelming support he received.
“Because you spoke, #Nigerian couldn’t happen to me,” Farotimi said.
His words reflected his relief and appreciation for public solidarity during his legal struggles.
Reacting to the video, Odinkalu praised Farotimi’s courage and integrity and acknowledged Farotimi’s efforts in exposing systemic issues in Nigeria’s judiciary and standing up for justice.
“Thank you @DeleFarotimi for standing in the pass for us all. May the Almighty prosper your generations,” Odinkalu wrote.
The defamation case has drawn huge public attention, with many seeing it as a test of freedom of expression and accountability in Nigeria.
