The Chinese government has announced that it will impose a 34 per cent tariff on all U.S. goods in response to tariffs imposed on its country by U.S. President Donald Trump, which went into effect on Wednesday.
Trump had announced sweeping tariffs on all goods entering the U.S., with China getting tariffs as high as 54 per cent.
In a statement released on Friday, China’s finance ministry condemned the US tariffs on Chinese products, stating that they are “not in line with international trade rules”, as they “seriously undermine China’s legitimate rights and interests and are a typical unilateral bullying practice.”
The ministry therefore announced a 34 per cent tariff “on all imported goods originating from the United States on the basis of the current applicable tariff rate”.
According to the ministry, the tariffs will take effect from April 10, 2025.
