The Ogun State High Court in Abeokuta has dismissed the lawsuit filed by Hon. Olakunle Oluomo, challenging his removal as Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly.
Justice Olugboyega Ogunfowora, delivering a well-researched judgment, upheld the Assembly’s constitutional right to regulate its internal affairs. The court resolved all issues raised by Oluomo in favor of the defendants, who are the current members of the Assembly led by Speaker Oludaisi Elemide.
The judgment effectively concludes the controversy surrounding Oluomo’s impeachment, which was carried out by 22 of the 26 members of the Assembly on January 23, 2024. The court affirmed the legality of the process, solidifying Elemide’s position as Speaker.
Oluomo had been impeached over allegations of gross misconduct, including high-handedness, lack of transparency, financial misappropriation, arrogance, poor leadership, and inciting division among Assembly members.
Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, representing the Odeda State Constituency, was elected Speaker following Oluomo’s removal. His nomination was proposed by Hon. Adegoke Awoso and seconded by Ademola Adeniran, with 22 lawmakers physically voting in his favor during the plenary session.
Elemide brings significant experience to the role, having served three terms in the Assembly since 2011. He also previously held positions such as Transition Chairman of Odeda Local Government Area in 2003. An architect by training, Elemide has a background in education, business, and politics, which he has leveraged throughout his public service career.
With this ruling, the Ogun State Assembly can now move forward, free from legal uncertainty, under Elemide’s leadership.
