The Kaduna State Chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly condemned the recent defections of its members to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the move as a betrayal of public trust and a desperate attempt by “spent forces” to remain politically relevant.
In a statement issued to newsmen in Kaduna by its Publicity Secretary, Hon. Maria Dogo, the PDP insisted that the defectors, particularly serving legislators, must vacate their seats in line with constitutional provisions.
According to the party, Sections 68(1)(g) and 109 of the Constitution mandate elected lawmakers to relinquish their seats upon defection unless there is a division in their party. The PDP, however, maintained that no such crisis exists within its leadership, either at the state or national level.
“We urge the Speakers of the House of Representatives and the Kaduna State House of Assembly to declare the seats of these defectors vacant and notify the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct bye-elections,” the statement read.
The party accused the defectors of opportunism, claimingu that most of them had either lost out in zoning arrangements or primaries and had been covertly working for the APC before making their defections official.
“These individuals are seeking automatic tickets in 2026, knowing full well that the APC does not conduct primaries,” the PDP stated, further challenging Governor Uba Sani to integrate them into his administration if he truly believes they have electoral value.
The PDP also slammed the state government for allegedly squandering public funds on elaborate receptions for defectors, urging the administration to focus instead on governance and the delivery of democratic dividends.
“Our people are yearning for the PDP years when the economy thrived, and citizens could afford basic needs. No amount of defections can save the APC-led government from its imminent exit in 2027,” the statement added.
