BREAKING: DHQ Responds to Allegations of Proposed French Military Base in Nigeria

The Defence Headquarters has categorically denied allegations that the French military is planning to establish a base in Nigeria.

On Saturday, human rights activist Mahdi Shehu launched a scathing critique of the government in a social media post, accusing it of downplaying the situation.

In a video post, Shehu asserted that several French military officers had arrived in Borno State as part of efforts to set up the base.

His post stated, “Last week, the Chief of Defence Staff denied any intention to establish French military bases in Nigeria.

“However, yesterday, the Chief of Army Staff welcomed the first contingent of French soldiers, deploying them to Maiduguri to ‘assist Nigeria in combating Boko Haram.’ This is the same Boko Haram they claim to have decimated, yet now they seem to be fleeing in fear.

“Before long, a French military base may be established in Maiduguri, potentially before the new year, under the guise of ‘fighting’ Boko Haram while they begin to explore and exploit valuable mineral resources, leading to the harassment, intimidation, and even annihilation of local communities, which has unfortunately become typical of French involvement in Africa.”

In response, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen. Edward Buba, issued a statement on Monday, labelling the claims as false and malicious.

He stated, “The Defence Headquarters has been made aware of online reports claiming the arrival of a contingent of French soldiers in Maiduguri for the purpose of establishing a French military base in North-East Nigeria.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria firmly declaring that this information is completely false and misleading. The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has recently addressed similar concerns in various media outlets, debunking these rumours and speculations.

“We urge the general public to disregard these unfounded claims circulating in certain circles. It is evident that these are the machinations of troublemakers.

“Nonetheless, the military will continue to fulfil its constitutional duties with professionalism and safeguard the territorial integrity of our nation. Please help disseminate this information.”
