BREAKING: EFCC Arrests Former Akwa Ibom Governor

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained former Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel, over allegations of a N700 billion fraud.

Emmanuel reportedly arrived at the EFCC’s main office in Abuja around 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, following an invitation from the anti-corruption agency.

According to reports, his arrest stems from a petition filed by a civil society organisation, the Network Against Corruption and Trafficking. The petition alleges that Emmanuel misappropriated state funds and cannot account for N700 billion during his time in office.

Furthermore, the petitioner claims that Udom received N3 trillion from the Federation Account over eight years but left behind a debt profile of N500 billion and unpaid ongoing projects worth N300 billion in Akwa Ibom State.

Emmanuel, a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), served as governor from 2015 to 2023.
