The family of Chief Isaiah Onyebuchi, a community leader, has accused the Anambra Internal Revenue Service (AIRS) of being responsible for his death after their vehicle allegedly crushed him.
AIRS is an autonomous body tasked with generating revenue for the state.
The tragic incident reportedly took place on December 11, 2024, near the Onitsha head bridge while AIRS officials were in pursuit of a vehicle that allegedly lacked the necessary permits.
Chukwuma Onyebuchi, the son of the deceased, shared the heartbreaking details with SaharaReporters, stating that his father’s body was deposited in a morgue without the family’s knowledge. After several days of searching for him without success, they eventually discovered his remains at the morgue.
Chukwuma described the incident, saying, “This is to bring to the world’s attention an act of murder by Anambra State Government revenue collection personnel at Onitsha Head Bridge.
My father, Chief Isaiah Onyebuchi, was struck by their vehicle while they pursued another car. His phone was stolen, and his body was later dumped in a morgue without any medical attention.”
He continued, “By the time we found him, his body had already started decaying. We need justice for my father, who was a well-respected community leader. Please help us bring this case to the government’s attention.”
Efforts by SaharaReporters to contact AIRS for comment were unsuccessful, as the phone numbers listed on the agency’s website were inactive.
Ikenga Tochukwu, spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, stated that he was unaware of the incident. However, he encouraged the family to contact him or report the matter to the nearest police station for further investigation.
