The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has emphasised the need for significant service improvements to accompany the recent 50% increase in telecommunications tariffs approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the FCCPC highlighted that consumer interests remain paramount, even as telecom operators face economic pressures and rising operational costs.
The NCC’s decision to approve the adjustment follows years of industry lobbying for higher tariffs, a move necessitated by escalating costs. However, the FCCPC commended the NCC’s approach, which balanced the need for industry sustainability with consumer protection. Notably, the approved increase is significantly lower than the over 100% initially proposed by operators.
In its directive, the NCC mandated that all tariffs must be transparent, devoid of hidden charges, and clearly communicated to consumers. Operators are now required to disclose key details such as cost, validity periods, and specific inclusions of plans, ensuring that consumers can make informed decisions without fear of unexpected charges.
Persistent consumer complaints about issues like network congestion, dropped calls, inconsistent internet speeds, and poor customer service remain a priority.
The FCCPC insisted that the tariff increase must directly result in visible and measurable improvements in these areas. It further noted that the increased revenues should be responsibly allocated to infrastructure development and service delivery enhancements, with clear mechanisms in place to monitor their utilisation.
The FCCPC highlighted a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the NCC as a framework to ensure that the tariff adjustment fosters fairness, transparency, and accountability. The partnership underscores the principle that pricing changes must balance industry sustainability with consumer benefits and protection.
As Nigeria continues to embrace technological advancements and digital connectivity, the FCCPC assured consumers that it remains committed to monitoring the impact of these tariff adjustments. Telecom operators are expected to prioritise network reliability, speed, accessibility, and customer service improvements.
Additionally, the FCCPC urged operators to clearly communicate the rationale and benefits of the tariff adjustments to the public.
Consumers are encouraged to report any unfair practices or concerns through the FCCPC’s official channels for effective resolution. The Commission reiterated its dedication to ensuring that the interests of consumers are safeguarded throughout this transition period and beyond.
