In accordance with the directive from Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, the state government has begun disbursing gratuities to civil servants who retired from January of this year.
Confirming this development to reporters in his office on Tuesday, State Accountant General Mr. Anthony Okenwa explained that the process started with those retirees who had undergone biometric verification, a measure implemented by the governor to eliminate ghost workers from the payroll and pension records.
Mr. Okenwa mentioned that the backlog of gratuities accumulated between 2010 and 2024 has been temporarily paused for the verification of retirees during that period, reaffirming Governor Mbah’s commitment to addressing the outstanding pensions and gratuities owed to all workers.
“As directed by the governor, we have commenced payments of gratuities to civil service retirees from January this year. The outstanding gratuities for those who retired between 2010 and 2024 will be settled in instalments as soon as the verification process is completed.
“The governor’s directive stipulates that all retirees will receive their arrears in instalments until the entire amount is fully settled,” he added.
It is worth noting that during his 2023 campaign, Mbah promised to resolve the backlog of pensions and gratuities inherited from previous administrations in the state.
