Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, has joined fellow Nigerians in mourning the leader of the foremost pan-Nigerian organisation, Afenifere, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, whom he described as a patriot, soldier of democracy, and esteemed statesman.
In a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, @PNMbah, Mbah praised the late nonagenarian as a brave and principled leader, unafraid to speak his mind, no matter whose interests were at stake.
“I received with profound shock and deep sorrow the news of Pa Adebanjo’s passing.
“He was a forthright, courageous, and principled leader who spoke the truth without fear or favour. Always at the forefront of the struggle for equity and justice, Pa Adebanjo resolutely defended what he believed to be right and just.
“He was a soldier of democracy. Whether during the era of Pa Obafemi Awolowo or in the fight against military rule with the National Democratic Coalition, NADECO, he was fearless in the trenches, championing democracy and its promise of a better future.
“On behalf of my family and the people of Enugu State, I extend heartfelt condolences to his family, the Government and people of Ogun State, Afenifere, and indeed to the Yoruba nation and Nigeria at large for this immeasurable loss,” Mbah stated.
He also prayed for the peaceful repose of the deceased’s soul.
