BREAKING: Gunmen ambush Police patrol team in Jos, kill two Inspectors

A police patrol team was ambushed on Tuesday in Jos Local Government Area of Plateau State, leading to the deaths of two inspectors.

The officers, who were part of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) of the Nigeria Police Force, were attacked by gunmen suspected to be robbers or kidnappers along Little Rayfield Road in Jos at about 7:30 pm.

The slain officers have been identified as Inspector Fatoye Femi and Inspector Dafur Dashit. During the exchange of gunfire, security operatives managed to apprehend one of the attackers, Auwal Ali, from Angwang Doki Bukuru.

According to a situation report (SITREP) obtained by SaharaReporters, the Superintendent of Police for ‘B’ Division and his team have been deployed to secure the area and prevent further violence.

The memo stated:

> “At about 7:30 pm on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, a team of police personnel attached to the IRT Department was on routine patrol along Little Rayfield Road, Jos South LGA, when they were attacked by gunmen suspected to be armed robbers or kidnappers.

“Inspectors Fatoye Femi and Dafur Dashit lost their lives in the attack, while one suspect, Auwal Ali, was arrested. The Superintendent of Police for ‘B’ Division Bukuru and his team have taken control of the area.”

Nigeria has been experiencing a rise in violent attacks targeting security personnel, highlighting worsening security challenges across the country.

In February 2024, four police officers were killed in a shootout with suspected Islamist insurgents in Borno State.

In April 2022, over 70 people were killed in coordinated attacks on multiple villages in Plateau State, prompting the deployment of additional police forces.

Also, in August 2022, unidentified gunmen attacked a security checkpoint in Riyom, Plateau, resulting in the deaths of two police officers.
