BREAKING: House of Representatives Vows to Review CAMA Act

According to reports in PUNCH, the House of Representatives has announced its commitment to revisiting the Company and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) with the aim of refining the regulatory framework governing civil society organizations (CSOs) in Nigeria.

This initiative is part of the Open Parliament and Citizens Engagement component of the legislative agenda led by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen in the 10th House.

The Speaker, in November 2023, emphasized the importance of citizens’ participation in the legislative process, stating, “The 10th House will ensure that legislative processes are transparent, and make our records, proceedings, and decisions accessible. When citizens can see how decisions are made, it enhances trust in the democratic process.”

Given the increased calls for the regulation of CSOs, the House aims to create an environment conducive to the effective functioning of these organizations.

Speaker Abbas Tajudeen pledged to establish formalized partnerships with non-governmental organizations and CSOs dedicated to promoting transparency, accountability, and public engagement.

Upon the resumption of plenary next week, one of the primary tasks for lawmakers will be the “Review of CAMA Act and other legislations to remove barriers that hinder CSOs from delivering on their mandate.”

This move aligns with the commitment to empowering civil society to contribute more effectively to the country’s development.

In a telephone conversation with Saturday PUNCH, a member of the House Committee on Commerce, speaking anonymously, expressed the House’s intention to identify relevant organizations for partnership to enhance transparency in government affairs.

The lawmaker stated, “I am sure you are aware that the House already has a good relationship with such bodies as YIAGA Africa, Follow the Money, BudgIT, and a host of others. We will work with these groups and encourage them to assist us in deepening the democratic conversations. As CSOs, their job is cut out for them, and we will make sure that we support them to deliver the goods for Nigerians.”
