BREAKING: Ibrahim Gusau Reveals Why NFF Appointed Eric Chelle As Super Eagles Coach

The President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Ibrahim Gusau, believes Eric Chelle’s understanding of the African football mentality will be instrumental in Nigeria’s bid to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, which will take place in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

Eric Chelle was officially introduced on Monday during a brief ceremony at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, just one week after being named the 37th coach of the Super Eagles. He has signed a two-year contract with an option for an additional year contingent upon securing the World Cup qualification.

During the unveiling ceremony, Gusau conveyed his confidence in Chelle, noting the positive interactions they have had in recent days. He reassured Nigerians of the federation’s unwavering support for Chelle in his new role.

“Eric is here to work, and I believe that if he can replicate the success he had in Mali, we will have the opportunity to qualify for the World Cup,” Gusau stated. “Historically, many successful coaches in Nigerian football have faced similar challenges upon their arrival. Just look at how Westerhof transitioned into Nigeria. What were the circumstances when Bonfrère Jo came? Our focus is on finding someone who grasps the unique mentality of African football.”

Gusau emphasized that the federation is committed to providing all the necessary resources for Chelle to execute his plans effectively, expressing confidence that the expected results will follow.

Chelle’s official duties are set to begin in March when the 2026 World Cup qualifying series resumes. Currently, the Super Eagles are placed fifth in their group with three points after four matches. Looking ahead, they will travel to Rwanda on March 17 and will host Zimbabwe in Uyo on March 24.

Chelle brings valuable experience, having earned five caps for the Mali national team and coaching various clubs, including GS Consolat, FC Martigues, Boulogne, and MC Oran.

At the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast, Chelle led Mali to the brink of the semi-finals, ultimately losing to the hosts and eventual champions 2-1 after extra time, despite leading until the final moments of regulation time.
