BREAKING: IGP threatens to sanction officers over unlawful, prolonged detention of suspects

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun has warned officers across all commands in the country to quit detaining suspects beyond the legally stipulated period.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP said incessant unlawful and prolonged detentions are prohibited within the Police.

He urged officers to respect the fundamental human rights of every citizen in pre-trial detention.

Egbetokun said adherence to legal provisions in this context is not only an obligation but a right of every Nigerian.

The statement said, “The IGP emphasized that adherence to legally stipulated detention periods is not only a legal obligation but also a fundamental aspect of upholding the dignity and rights of individuals, as enshrined in Sections 34 and 35 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which guarantees the right to dignity and personal liberty.”

He further warned that officers who violate the principles of respect for human rights in carrying out their duties will be sanctioned.

According to the IGP, the Police Force is committed to ensuring that individuals in custody are treated with respect in line with the provisions of the law.

“Calling for a culture of accountability within the Force, the IGP thereby encourage officers to uphold the highest standards of conduct in their interactions with the public.

“By prioritizing human rights, the Nigeria Police Force aims to build stronger relationships with the communities it serves, ensuring that policing is conducted with integrity and respect,” Adejobi said in the statement.

He also noted that the present Police leadership is committed to upholding the rights of citizens which he said reflects the broader vision of the Force.
