BREAKING: In 2006 I wanted to be a Deputy Governor, so the then deputy Governor invited me and told me that this office has no money

At the funeral for the late Access Bank CEO Herbert Wigwe’s wife and son, Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Rivers Governor Siminalayi Fubara got into a heated argument, according to the Daily Post. A video that was widely shared on the X platform showed the tension that developed at the burial site.

“You want to kill, You want to bury, what is it all about?” fubara bemoaned as he questioned the fundamentals of the political conflict. In response, Akpabio related an earlier incident in which he ran for deputy governor in 2006. He emphasized the role’s lack of financial appeal and recalled warning against violence when his integrity was put into question.

The remains of Herbert Wigwe, his wife, and son arrived in Rivers State for burial following a tragic helicopter crash in California on February 9, 2024. The incident marred the mourning atmosphere, redirecting attention to the discord between political figures at the funeral. As the nation mourns the loss of prominent individuals, the confrontation serves as a stark reminder of the underlying tensions within Nigeria’s political landscape.

Fubara, while giving his remarks at the burial had said: “This one has to do with our political class, what is all this trouble all about.

“You want to kill, You want to bury, what is it all about.”

Akpabio, while making his own remarks, went on to reply to the governor thus: “What is the struggle all about? I will answer you.

“The struggle, we are not talking politics. In 2006 I wanted to be a Deputy Governor, so the then deputy Governor invited me and told me that this office has no money, there is nothing in it. I don’t know why you still insist on moving me from here and take over.
