BREAKING: It’s Disgraceful For Militia To Kill Troops, Commander Tells Soldiers

In a push to enhance the battlefield competence of troops, the Nigerian Army Headquarters Garrison on Monday flagged off the 2025 Corporals and Below Competition in Abuja, emphasizing the urgent need for soldiers to acquire survival skills necessary to defeat enemies in modern warfare.

The Commander of the Army Headquarters Garrison, Maj.-Gen. Koko Isoni, reiterated the importance of hands-on training for junior personnel, noting that tactical preparedness remains a priority in the face of unconventional threats.

Speaking at the event’s opening ceremony, Isoni, represented by the Garrison’s Chief of Staff, Brig.-Gen. Suleman Tilawan highlighted the role of practical exercises in transforming soldiers into efficient fighters on the battlefield.

“The essence of training is for you to operate in the field.

“We are not interested in going back to theory; we want people that will bring their experience on what you people are going to face out there.

“It is becoming very disgraceful that these people are coming from the bush, ragtag militia and they are going to kill you.

“All they are doing is just to carry rifles and they will attack and they will succeed. You will carry rifles, carry weapons and you will still run away!

“We are here to ensure that you get the skills you need to survive, to defeat enemies, if that thing is not in you, then you are wasting your time here,’’ he said.

The competition features a variety of rigorous military tasks such as combat swimming, obstacle crossing, weapon handling, map reading, compass navigation, and standard drills.

Isoni said these activities are designed to boost both the professional competence and combat readiness of participants.

Also speaking at the event, Garrison Training Officer, Brig.-Gen. Ndareke Orok, emphasized the competition’s broader objectives, which include promoting teamwork, strengthening tactical coordination, and upholding the core values of the Nigerian Army.

“As we progress with today’s event, let us remain focused, respectful, and determined. May this competition serve as another stepping stone towards building a stronger and more united Nigerian army,’’ he said.

The competition is expected to serve not only as a test of skill but also as a morale booster, as the Nigerian Army continues efforts to reassert dominance in challenging operational environments
