Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, has reinstated the Paramount Chief of Piriga Chiefdom, Jonathan Zamuna, in Lere Local Government Area, following a court ruling nullifying his dethronement.
Zamuna was deposed on May 22, 2023, by former governor, Nasir El-Rufai, just days before the end of his administration.
Displeased with the decision, the traditional ruler challenged his removal in court.
In a landmark judgment on June 14, 2024, Justice Bashar Alkali of the National Industrial Court in Kaduna declared Zamuna’s deposition “irregular, unfair, null, and unconstitutional.”
Naija News reports that the court ordered his reinstatement along with the payment of all salaries, allowances, and benefits within 30 days.
During a meeting with traditional rulers in July 2024, Governor Sani promised to honour the court’s ruling.
“I want to remind you with every sense of humility, that I am a democrat and a respecter of the rule of law,” he said at the time.
On Wednesday, Governor Sani fulfilled his pledge by formally reinstating Zamuna during a ceremony at the Council Chambers of Sir Kashim Ibrahim House in Kaduna.
“We are committed to upholding the principles of justice and fairness in all our actions,” Sani said, reflecting on the importance of the reinstatement.
He advised the reinstated chief to treat all members of his chiefdom equally, without ethno-religious bias, adding, “This is a solemn moment for us as a government and as a people. It is an opportunity for us to reflect on our past actions and how they have impacted our state.”
The governor highlighted the significance of lessons learned from past actions, urging Chief Zamuna to lead with dedication, courage, and compassion.
“You now have a unique opportunity to serve your people with dedication, courage, and compassion,” Sani said.
He reiterated his administration’s commitment to the rule of law, stating, “Our administration stands for the rule of law, due process, and justice. That is why we did not waste time in complying with the judgment of the Kaduna State Industrial Court.”
An elated Chief Zamuna expressed gratitude to the governor, describing him as a blessing to Kaduna State.
“Your leadership has brought peace and stability to our state. You have demonstrated your commitment to justice and fairness, and we are grateful for that,” Zamuna said.
