The Kano State House of Assembly has passed the Forensic Laboratory Bill, paving the way for the establishment of a state forensic agency.
The bill was passed for its third reading following deliberations by the Committee of the Whole House during a plenary session presided over by Speaker Jibrin Falgore.
The Majority Leader of the House, Lawan Husseini (NNPP-Dala), explained that the bill aims to create a fully operational forensic laboratory to support law enforcement agencies in the collection, analysis, and presentation of evidence.
He further stated that the laboratory would assist in resolving land disputes, certificate forgery, and other document-related matters.
Husseini emphasised that the agency, once established, would significantly enhance the justice system, promote public safety, and contribute to the effective resolution of both criminal and civil cases.
Forensic expert Saleh Muhammad, speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) about the bill’s passage, commended the state assembly for the milestone.
He noted that having a dedicated forensic agency ensures that evidence is collected, analysed, and stored according to strict scientific protocols, reducing the risk of errors in investigations.
Muhammad added that a state-run forensic laboratory would enable law enforcement agencies to access forensic analysis more efficiently, thereby expediting investigations and legal proceedings.
“This will lead to quicker case resolutions and the effective delivery of justice,” he remarked.
