BREAKING: Kano metropolis chokes on waste as refuse management efforts fall short…as mechanics, residents dump refuse on major roads

The Kano State Government’s efforts to ensure a clean and healthy environment through the State’s Refuse Management Board, REMASAB, appear to be failing, as waste refuse has become a major threat to environmental safety in the metropolitan area.

Despite the government’s best intentions, mechanics and residents have taken to dumping huge amounts of refuse on major roads, posing a significant risk to public health and safety.

A visit to some parts of the metropolis by our correspondent revealed that the problem of waste disposal has assumed alarming proportions, with mechanics and spare parts dealers at Kofar Ruwa to Kabuga route, near the Northwest University, dumping all manner of waste on the main road.

This has not only defaced the environment but also constitutes a nuisance that undermines the government’s efforts to maintain a clean and healthy environment.

One of the mechanics, who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity, advised the state government to provide a designated space for dumping waste.

“If the government can provide a space for us to dump our waste, we will be happy to cooperate with them,” he said.

Also speaking, the former chairman of the Central Working Committee on Self-Help Groups in Kano State, Alhaji Ibrahim Garba Aminu Kofar Na’isa, called on the state government to revive the activities of self-help groups in order to achieve the desired objectives in the area of environmental sanitation.

“We are always ready to come out and work for the sanitation of our environment, and I advise the Kano State Government to join hands with the self-help groups that are willing to participate in cleaning Kano State like in the past,” he said.

Aminu commended the state governor and the Managing Director of REMASAB, Ambassador Ahmadu Zago, for their efforts to ensure a clean and healthy environment.

“I commend the governor and the managing director of REMASAB for their efforts, and I urge them to do more to address the problem of waste disposal in the state,” he said.
