Kenyan long-distance runner, Edwin Kibet Koech, has emerged as the winner of the 10th edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon.
Kibet outpaced over a hundred elite marathoners on Saturday morning to claim victory in the 42km race. This marks his second triumph in three years, having previously won the marathon in 2023.
The 41-year-old crossed the finish line in 2 hours, 14 minutes, and 18 seconds, securing the grand prize of $50,000.
In the women’s category, Ethiopia’s Guta Meseret Hirpa clinched her first-ever Lagos City Marathon title, finishing in 2 hours, 14 minutes, and 4 seconds.
The race, which began at the National Stadium in Surulere and ended at Eko Atlantic City in Victoria Island, has grown in prestige over the years. In 2023, it was upgraded to a gold-label marathon by World Athletics, and organizers have hinted at a potential platinum-label certification—making it Africa’s first marathon to achieve such a status.
Past winners of the marathon include Bernard Sang (2024), Geleta Ulfata of Ethiopia, David Barmasa, and Emmanuel Naibei.
