The 2025 edition of the Shell/NNPC Tennis Tournament has reached its pivotal stages, with key competitors eyeing their chances to seize the coveted title.

One such contender is Godwin Kienka, who is competing in the Veterans Singles category at the ongoing tournament held at the tennis courts of Ikoyi Club 1938. Kienka, the director of the International Tennis Academy and a former International Tennis Federation umpire, is the defending champion in his category.

In an interview on Wednesday, Kienka praised the tournament organisers and sponsors for their efforts.

“This event is highly competitive each year, and the Ikoyi Club Tennis Section has done an excellent job of hosting it, particularly with the continued support from our sponsors,” Kienka stated.

“I find myself in the finals once again and anticipate an exciting match against a familiar opponent. This year has seen a surge in talent, and the semi-finals kept spectators on the edge of their seats.”

Kienka’s opponent in the Veterans Singles final, scheduled for Saturday, will be Edet Akpaso.

Today, the semi-finals for the Super Veterans category will take place, alongside the Men’s Singles B semi-final matches at the Ikoyi Club tennis courts. Dominic Icha will face Vincent Essien, while Oluwole Fajobi and Abiodun Adepoju will compete for a spot in the final.

Ehiz Uwague, Captain of the Ikoyi Club Tennis Section, expressed his enthusiasm for the standard of the ongoing competition. He remains optimistic about the finals on Saturday, predicting an explosive showdown across all categories.
