The Enugu State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate for the 2023 general election, Hon. Chijioke Edeoga, have resumed discussions that may facilitate the return of the former party member to the PDP.
Edeoga, who represented the PDP in the House of Representatives from 1999 to 2003, has also served as Special Adviser (Legal) to the former Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, during the 6th Senate. Additionally, he was the Special Assistant on National Assembly Matters to former President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan and held the position of Commissioner under former Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi from 2015 to 2022, all while affiliated with the PDP prior to his departure from the party to contest for governor under the LP platform following the gubernatorial primary.
Addressing reporters at a joint press briefing after a closed-door meeting at Edeoga’s residence in Enugu, the Chairman of the Enugu State Chapter of the PDP, Dr. Martins Chukwunweike, stated that the meeting aligned with his agenda to unify the party and welcome back former members.
“The PDP used to be the dominant party in Enugu State. However, in the last election, things did not go as they once did. Upon my appointment, I conferred with the governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, about the need to do everything possible to reintegrate our former members. Our objective is to restore Enugu State to being 100% PDP as it once was. Thus, we decided to reach out to some key individuals who have always been with the PDP.
“Chijioke Edeoga is one such individual. During our conversation, he expressed plainly that he owes much to the PDP and has achieved a great deal through it. He has served on the State Executive Council of Enugu State under the PDP, among other roles.
“Prior to today, we had numerous discussions, and I came to his home with my executive team – including the Deputy Chairman, Secretary, and Publicity Secretary. He was pleased with our visit, and I believe he is inclined to return to the party. However, as he is not acting alone and has a team to consider, it is only prudent for him to consult them before providing us with a definitive response. Our goal is to approach the next election united as the family we have always been. We are confident that PDP under Dr. Peter Mbah will reclaim its status as the only party in Enugu State.
“Moreover, he has asked us to convey to the governor that he has observed his commendable efforts; even the blind can see the improved roads. Thus, our visit has been fruitful, and the next time we speak, it will be to announce what I believe will be his expected response.”
Edeoga also affirmed Dr. Chukwunweike’s statements, emphasising his intention to consult widely with his supporters in addition to discussions with the PDP leaders.
“Yes, the leadership of the PDP in Enugu State came to see me and requested my return to the party. I informed them that I would consult extensively because I am supported by numerous individuals of goodwill. I have great respect for both the team and the Chairman, but it is not customary for the Igbo to respond immediately to such significant matters. I will take this home, and as promptly as possible, I will communicate my position to the Chairman. It has been a truly wonderful meeting of former allies and brothers,” he stated.
