BREAKING: Labour Unions Threaten Nationwide Strike Over Rivers State Emergency Rule

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and Joint Negotiation Council (JNC) have issued a strong warning to the Federal Government, demanding an immediate reversal of the emergency rule imposed in Rivers State.

In a joint statement, the unions condemned the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and State Assembly members, calling it unconstitutional and undemocratic. They insisted that elected officials should only be removed through legal means.

Labour leaders expressed concern over the economic impact of the decision, warning that local government workers are already suffering as salaries remain unpaid. They argued that this worsens financial hardship at a time of rising inflation and economic instability.

The unions stressed that Rivers State is a key economic hub, and any political crisis there could have far-reaching consequences. They also warned that instability could scare away investors, reduce the state’s revenue, and weaken job opportunities.

Calling for urgent intervention, they urged President Bola Tinubu, the National Assembly, and the judiciary to act swiftly in reversing the emergency rule. They also emphasized the need for a peaceful resolution through dialogue.
