BREAKING: Lawyers Insist Senator Natasha Must Prove Allegations Against Senate President

Legal experts have called for an urgent investigation into the sexual harassment allegations made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Speaking to Vanguard in separate interviews, the lawyers described the allegations as serious and concerning.

They warned that the issue must not be ignored but stressed that the burden of proof lies with Senator Natasha, as required by law.

Chief Chukwuma Nwachukwu, a human rights lawyer based in Abuja, stated:
“It is crucial for the integrity of the legislature that this matter is properly addressed and not dismissed as is often the case in our political system. Sexual harassment allegations are taken very seriously in developed societies, especially considering the vulnerability of women and their right to legal protection.

“In this case, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has made a serious accusation against the Senate President. However, the law is clear—whoever makes an allegation must provide evidence. She must fulfill this legal obligation, and the coming days will be critical for the Senate and the National Assembly.

“If the claims are proven true, necessary reforms must be put in place to prevent such misconduct in the legislative system.”

Another lawyer, Mr. Albert Effiong, emphasized the need for an independent investigation:

“This is a serious allegation, and the Federal Government should immediately set up an independent investigative panel. Senator Natasha must be given the opportunity to present her evidence, as required by law.

“Since Senator Akpabio leads the Senate, it would be inappropriate for the Senate to conduct the probe itself. If the Senate does investigate, Senator Akpabio should step down temporarily to ensure fairness. It is a fundamental legal principle that no one should judge their own case.

“It is unfortunate and embarrassing that both the accused and the accuser are senior legal professionals.”

Mr. Obeta Williams expressed skepticism about how the allegations were made public:
“If the allegations are true, Senator Natasha, as a legal practitioner, should know the proper steps to take. Bringing such serious accusations to the media instead of pursuing internal procedures was not the best approach. She could have submitted a formal petition to the appropriate authorities.

“This controversy has not only tarnished the reputation of the Senate but has also embarrassed the nation, making Nigeria trend for negative reasons.”
