Marseille’s offer for Greenwood includes a fixed fee of €27.6 million (£23.3m), with an additional €4 million (£3.4m) in potential add-ons. The deal also features a future sale clause, ensuring Manchester United receive a percentage if Marseille decides to sell Greenwood in the future.

Sources from The Athletic indicate that Greenwood has verbally committed to joining Marseille and is scheduled to travel to France for a medical examination and to finalize his contract.

Greenwood, who returned to Manchester United’s training ground last Monday, was informed by club officials that he has no future at Old Trafford. The 22-year-old spent the previous season on loan at Getafe after it was decided he wouldn’t return to Erik ten Hag’s first-team plans.

Since his arrest in January 2022 for charges including attempted rape, controlling behavior, and assault, Greenwood has not featured for Manchester United.

Marseille’s pursuit of Greenwood has sparked controversy, with Marseille’s mayor, Benoit Payan, publicly criticizing the move.

“Greenwood’s behavior is reprehensible and unacceptable. The images I saw of him hitting his wife deeply shocked me. Such actions are unbecoming of a man and have no place on this team,” Payan stated in an interview with French broadcaster RMC Sport.

“The values of OM and Marseille are completely contrary to this. It’s regrettable. I will urge Pablo Longoria not to sign Greenwood. I don’t want my club associated with someone who commits such shameful acts.”

Despite the backlash, Marseille’s head coach Roberto De Zerbi, who recently departed Brighton, defended the potential signing of Greenwood.

“He is a champion, an international-level player,” De Zerbi remarked. “I don’t know the details of his past or what happened exactly. I prefer not to delve into the personal lives of players. When a player joins my club, I treat him like my own child.”

“I will support him through thick and thin. Even if I need to reprimand him in private, I will defend him publicly. My players are like my sons.”

The situation surrounding Greenwood’s transfer to Marseille continues to unfold amid contrasting opinions and strong sentiments from various stakeholders.
