Arsenal’s manager, Mikel Arteta, has revealed that Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti urged him to win the UEFA Champions League following the Gunners’ victory over the Spanish giants on Wednesday night, April 16.
Note that Arsenal entered the second leg of the quarter-final tie with a commanding 3-0 lead, established in the first match, which set high expectations for their performance at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.
In a tense second-leg encounter, Bukayo Saka had an early opportunity to extend Arsenal’s lead but uncharacteristically missed a penalty. However, he quickly redeemed himself by scoring in the second half, skillfully lifting the ball over Real Madrid’s goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to give Arsenal a crucial advantage.
Although Vinicius Junior managed to equalize for Madrid with a well-placed shot after capitalizing on a defensive lapse from Arsenal, the pressure remained on the home side. Arsenal responded with poise, and Gabriel Martinelli put the game beyond doubt with a brilliant breakaway goal, ensuring a resounding 5-1 aggregate victory.
After the match, Mikel Arteta told reporters that Ancelotti was genuinely rooting for them to secure the Champions League title.
“Carlo Ancelotti has been very supportive,” Arteta told TNT Sports. “He told me that he hopes we win the Champions League and that he is truly happy for us.”
Note that the last four teams that have eliminated Real Madrid from the Champions League have gone on to lift the trophy.
Arteta reflected on the match, labelling the 2-1 victory at the Bernabéu as “one of the best nights in my football career.”
The triumph not only secured Arsenal’s place in the semi-finals but also allowed them to make a statement against the current champions of Europe.
He acknowledged the historical weight of facing a club with Real Madrid’s legacy, stating, “It has been an inspiration for all of us in this competition.”
The manager emphasized the importance of their performance, noting, “To win the tie in this manner is something we should be immensely proud of.”
