BREAKING: MTN Data Cost: Nigerians Kick as Telecommunication Company Raises Price of 15GB to N6k from N2k

Nigerians have decried MTN Nigeria’s increase of its 15GB data plan from N2k to N6k.

MTN Nigeria raised the prices of its internet plans in response to the 50% tariff increase approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in January.

Apart from the 15GB plan, Tech Cabal reported that the 20GB plan has been adjusted to N7,500, up from N5,500.

MTN Nigeria also increased its 90-day 1.5TB plan from N150,000 to N240,000 and the 600GB 90-day plan from ₦75,000 to ₦120,000.

Nigerians took to social media to condemn the increment, with many lamenting that it is way above the 50% NCC approved.

MTN Nigeria’s data cost increase sparks outrage

“Making internet access a luxury for many. The question is what’s the justification, and where does this leave small businesses and students who rely on affordable data hun.”

@AfrokonnectNG said:

“This sudden price increase from ₦2,000 to ₦6,000 for 15GB is wild! How are people supposed to cope with such an outrageous hike? Internet access is essential for work, education, and staying connected, yet it’s being priced like a luxury.

“At this rate, users may be forced to look for alternatives or reduce their data consumption drastically. MTN really needs to reconsider this move because it’s not sustainable for the average Nigerian. What do you think about this development?”

@JonalistIsrael said:

“Here we go. This will also drive other things up. People who provide services relating to Internet will hike their fees. That’s the reality. If JAMB registration was N1k before, it would go up.”

@femi4yo said:

“If they (MTN) or any telecommunication companies start charging higher, it means the government is asking for more from them.

“You will be a st#p!d person to think it is their fault.

“There is no fire without smoke.”

@Gorilla23mp said:

“But this is almost 200% increment, I thought they said it won’t be up to 100%?”

@omuinetimi said:

“They already made it clear they were going to increase their prices, they fought for a hike in tariffs, they got it and now they must use it.”

In a related story, Legit.ng reported that MTN had sent a message to its subscribers about network fluctuations.
