The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called on members of the National Assembly to prioritise the welfare of Nigerians over personal conflicts and political disputes.
In a statement signed by NANS National President, Comrade Oladoja Olushola, and National Public Relations Officer, Comrade Samson Adeyemi, the student body urged lawmakers to remain focused on legislative matters that directly impact citizens rather than engaging in actions that could damage the reputation of individuals, the Senate, and the nation.
This statement follows a recent controversy in the Senate involving Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan over allegations of sexual harassment.
NANS expressed concern over the growing trend of personal attacks in the Senate, especially at a time when the country is facing economic challenges such as inflation and the rising cost of living. The association emphasized that lawmakers should concentrate on policies that promote stability, economic growth, and national unity.
The student body also stressed the importance of upholding the integrity of the National Assembly, calling on Senators to conduct themselves with dignity and professionalism. It warned that continued political infighting could harm Nigeria’s reputation on the global stage.
Regarding the ongoing case in court, NANS urged all parties involved to refrain from making statements that could escalate tensions or disrupt national peace. The association also recommended that the Senate take appropriate disciplinary action against any member found guilty of misconduct after the court’s verdict.
NANS encouraged Senate President Akpabio to strengthen collaboration between the National Assembly and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to ensure effective governance.
As representatives of Nigerian students, NANS reaffirmed its commitment to defending the integrity of political institutions and promoting accountability. The group called for calm and urged lawmakers to prioritize national progress over personal disputes.
